LHASA, October 29 (Xinhuanet)- An official has described what the Dalai Lama said at the European Parliament as "sheer nonsense".

The official from the Foreign Affairs Committee of the Chinese National People's Congress (NPC) said what the Dalai Lama told the European legislators as "sheer nonsense designed to fool the world".

The Dalai Lama said at the October 24 session of the European Parliament that Tibet is "oppressed by force and scarred by suffering" and "an entire people with its unique culture and identity are facing the threat of extinction".

The official of the NPC foreign affairs committee said that the Dalai Lama had fled from the country for more than four decades by now and has never been back to see for himself what has happened and what is happening to this part of the country.

The Dalai Lama, therefore, knows nothing of the real situation in Tibet, said the official who added that the Dalai Lama fled the country after the failture of an armed rebellion in 1959.

The same official said that a democratic reform was carried out at the request of the local people after the Dalai Lama had fled Tibet.

The extremely barbarous serfdom system was abolished in the reform and in 1965 the ethnic regional autonomy was instituted in Tibet to make the region one of the five autonomous regions in China.

The once serfs and slaves under the Dalai Lama's rule have become masters of their own fate and with the assistance from the central government and other parts of the country, the economy in Tibet has experienced a fast growth and the living standards in Tibet have therefore been raised greatly, the official added.

The ethnic culture, education and public health in Tibet have also scored tremendous progress and freedom of religious belief and the fundamental rights and freedoms have been guaranteed to the local people.

The official said that fresh achievements are being made in Tibet at present in the reform and opening-up of the region, especially in the economic restructuring.

"Tibet now enjoys a stable society and an ever-developing economy and local people are living and working in harmony and contentment," said the official. (End)
